Sometimes
Austin, the "Live
Music Capital of the World," and San
Antonio, home of The Alamo, are included in the Texas
Hill Country area, but I figure that there are plenty of sites
about them already, so they are not here, except on some pages
with links to resources outside the Hill Country. My Hill Country
is west of Austin and northwest of San Antonio, and includes
San Saba and Lampasas to the north,
Junction to the west,
Uvalde
to the south, and San
Marcos to the east.
The
wonderful little historic German town of Fredericksburg
in Gillespie County is in the heart of the Texas Hill Country,
and is just a little over an hour west of Austin. Fredericksburg
is famous for its downtown Historic District with many points
of interest, live music venues, gift, antique, and other unique
shops, restaurants and bars, and art galleries. The Pedernales
River Valley area around Fredericksburg is known for its
flower and peach growers, several vineyards and wineries, and
many bed and breakfast accomodations. We have heard that over
five million people annually visit Gillespie county alone.
Also
in the middle of the Texas Hill Country is larger Kerrville,
where sparkling spring fed creeks meander through the rugged
terrain and rolling hills of the Guadalupe River Valley. Truly
a "Hill Country Paradise." Huge cypress trees, abundant
wildlife, and many food, music, and arts festivals make this
a great destination. Every season in Kerrville offers an array
of activities. You'll see how easy it is to "lose your heart
to the Hills." Kerrville is located about an hour northwest
of San Antonio.
Other
Hill Country towns
of interest include Luckenbach
of Waylon & Willie fame, Johnson
City LBJ Country, Boerne
pronounced "Bernie," Bandera
Cowboy Capital, Llano
and New Braunfels Main Street
Cities, Lampasas
Saratoga of the South, San
Marcos Jewel of the Corridor, Hondo
"Deep" Creek, Canyon
Lake Water Recreation Capital, Wimberley
Market Days and Glass Works, Blanco
Lavender Capital of Texas, Comfort
Haven in the Hills, and Uvalde
Honey Capital of the World.
There is always something to see and do here. Come and find out
why so many people visit our beautiful Hill Country, and some
come back to stay when they realize this sure beats the big city
rat race!
