A number of years ago, I designed an art gallery building that was inspired by a
dream I had walking (floating) through a space like this.  (The Walker Art Center
in Minneapolis, Minnesota was also a big inspiration!)  This is an approximately
3,000 sq ft, 2-story, split-level with 7 different levels including a balcony.
  Each level
is about 2.5' above the previous level.
It has rooms with non-parallel walls around
an open central stairway, and includes 2 galleries, office, storage, work room, and
outdoor
sculpture balcony.  The grounds below the balcony could be a sculpture
garden.  A similar concept could
be modified into a home or a recording studio.

1st floor plan (above) showing the lower 4 levels: starting with the 1st-level HVAC in the center and
storage area (about 20'x20')
on the left side; moving clockwise up to the 2nd-level double work area
(
about 16'x18' and about 20'x24') with garage door, back entry door, sliding room divider (to contain the
heat or cold when the garage door is open),
northwest-facing clerestory windows, and 3 bathrooms; then
up to the 3rd-level large gallery (
about 20'x28') with angled ceiling and north-facing clerestory windows;
and up to the 4th-level front doors and entry foyer (
about 12'x16'), and small coat room.  © Roy Rendahl

Art Gallery 2nd Floor Design Plan by Roy Rendahl
2nd floor plan (above) showing the upper 3 levels: starting with the 5th-level office on the
left side
(about 20'x20' with back stairs down to the 1st- and 2nd-level storage and work
areas) and a
stairway landing (about 4'x6') in the center, moving clockwise up to the 6th-
level upper
back foyer (about 12'x16') which overlooks the entry foyer and has sliding
glass doors to an outdoor sculpture balcony (
about 24'x28'), and then finally counter
clockwise up to the 7th-level small gallery (
about 18'x20') with north-facing windows
looking out on the sculpture balcony.
(This building design could have larger bathrooms
and ramps or an elevator in order to be better used as a commercial building.  I think I'd
also try to put an overhang and more windows on the south-facing storage, coat room,
and office wall.  And maybe a back door to a sculpture garden.)  © Roy Rendahl
