A United States Patent numbered US4884792 was granted to Roy Rendahl
for his design of a locking self-adjusting cam-operated clamp.

When I was designing this clamp as part of an industrial air conditioning fan
assembly machine, the head of the company's machine building division (my
boss's boss) saw it and told me: "You're making a $2,000 clamp when you could buy one for
$200! But I'll let it go into production, since you've already designed it."

That manager always had a knack for knowing just when something was at the
final stage of assembly out on the production floor. That day, he rounded up all the
engineers and took us out to the shop to see the newly assembled clamp. He said
that he had never seen anything like it and that the company would try to patent it.
We did.
